How to fix financial advisers’ 90s image

Fewer than 6% of retail investment advisers are aged 30 or less. More than 50% are older than 50. How can it be that workers are pursuing their dream careers in record numbers and yet the financial industry is struggling to make a case for itself?

I recently had a very nice dinner with a small group of financial advisers, where we discussed the state of the industry and where we saw it heading.

We covered a wide range of topics, but one issue kept cropping up time and time again – the difficulty they were experiencing hiring young advisers.

Now, you may think this is nothing new and that, perhaps, recruiting young talent has always been a problem for the industry. And you may well be right.
